Huevos verdes con jamón Reviews
The translation of the book is very well written. I can read it just as smoothly and comically as I do the English version. I've purchased other books in the past that translate word for word and it reads horribly. Books need to be altered in the way that makes sense in that particular language. The translator did a wonderful job on this one.
Green Eggs and Ham is probably one of my favorite books. I wasn't sure how the translated version would work, and my first reading of it was more of an exercise in reading than enjoyment. As the pages turned, however, I found myself transported back to the days of childhood, then adolescence when reading to young siblings, then adulthood when reading to children. The familiarity of the rhythmic writings awakened within me and the words flowed as natural in Spanish as they do in English. I so look forward to finding more Dr. Seuss books in Spanish and introducing a new generation to both the English and Spanish versions of these classics.
Mostly, my 3 year old grandson loves it. He is being raised in a monolingual household, though enough of his extended family have taken enough Spanish classes to read this to him decently. He has the same thing in English, so we ask him, In English o en Espanol?
My husband speaks Spanish and I hobble along admirably. The kids are learning little bits here and there but, unfortunately, we don't speak it nearly enough at home. Just like reading books in English is important for children to learn language and speech structure, reading Spanish language books can help reinforce grammar and cadence.
Sit with your wee ones, with the English and Spanish version side by side. They will love learning new words and sounds and you'll get a good work out on practicing your Spanish.
I'm a teacher and this is about the 3rd or 4th copy of this I've bought because I keep giving them away. My Spanish speaking students love it. The rhyming is brilliantly done. It has the same meter as the original, but the words are all in Spanish.
I love Dr. Seuss. Sometimes the Spanish translations don't make sense or are nor as rhymical as they are in English. However, Huevos verdes con jamón is very lirical and has the sense that I think would have made Dr. Seuss proud.
I was looking for a few books to read to my daughter in Spanish but looking for something more than "baby's first words." I thought Dr Seuss would be a great start. I am happy to say I wasn't disappointed. I took my time reading all the reviews about the translators & I am glad I did. Aida E Marcuse is great. She didn't go for the easy literal translation like so many of the books I have bought before. The story flows nicely & of course - it rhymes!! Just like a Dr Seuss book should.
